"Any idea when you're interviewing the band?" an inquiry pops up. "My request was to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There's just a single issue: I also wants to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're not alone. A host of celebrated fans have publicly coveted the honor.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the best groups, they're a tight-knit trio. Their visuals often show them walking in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such boundless happiness you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the biggest honour. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire young girls to form a group."

"Therefore anyone are welcome to be the next part of the family."

Historic Milestone

The band are connecting from a break, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in contention for the award.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the nomination resonates with the band.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge milestone," says Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the pioneers that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The project was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that unique liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The themes track breakups and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them determining in the moment who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to make an effort in ignoring the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That newfound confidence demanded a new sound – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Humor

The band's honesty fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their dating horror stories.

A former partner left Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Future

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an global fan base.

However Haim will forever be their number one commitment.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was little," shares Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
