The Journey of a Phenomenon tends to be characterized by clear stages.

1. The Grand Vision

An inspiring figure or coaches present a new and transcendent idea offering a panacea for disconnected individuals.

And so it goes. They’re getting ready to challenge the establishment in Australia. Pressure is mounting. Signs of trouble appear from within. One individual, vulnerable, shivering, the phrase ATTACKING MINDSET displayed prominently as a statement, has stumbled through the lines and is taken aside with discretion for a temporary assignment at Derbyshire.

Remember the early days, when the world was still young? The era of early Bazball, of Bazball without brains.

2. Initial Adoration

Movement founders offer a new start, optimism ahead, love, salvation within a community who all believe in the method.

What was this thing initially? Just men on a balcony basking in glory. Ink. Strength. Determination. Peak performance vibes. Oh sure, The squad insist Bazball doesn’t actually exist, which is funny because if it doesn’t exist, what did we see?

Yet it’s clear its essence. It’s the player playing a shot so unconventional it has to be pixelated. It’s the adrenaline of the captain at his peak, a look that says: pensive Nordic god, beard made of wood, hair woven from beaver hide, so authentically Modern Savage you half-expect to notice and notice he’s fielding on the ground shirtless embracing nature.

It’s the opener still being allowed to talk in press conferences, out there looking like a joyful figure in a waistcoat, expressing thoughts like we are actively deconstructing the orange. Certainly, the atmosphere, for a significant period, was entirely positive.

3. The Growth Phase

Building period. Cohesion maintained by rote learning of the cult’s slogans. These ideas can appear contradictory as a test of “true belief”.

Does anyone else feel? The reaction, the outrage, the feeling of letdown following the initial loss feels overblown, unwarranted. The performance was poor on the field, as history shows. They were savaged defensively in a short span as plans unraveled, carved around by the opponent imitating their style effectively, adaptive to conditions, a performer excelling with a kind of light around him.

And now we have this the attacks, the anger, the sense of English Test cricket as a failure. The feeling seems to be that losing isn’t enough, they need to lose righteously, to be cleansed, obliterated, overwhelmed through sheer skill of the pace attack, the low-fi orthodoxies of the bowler, seen enjoying achievements humbly like he’s just been given a rewarding prize. How will they respond?

4. The Backlash Phase

Problems arise from failures in the plan. However, faults are ignored. It turns to hostility externally.

Ultimately, approaching from the second Test, we have now reached an intriguing moment in the story of this thing. They might succeed in the next Test in a blur of adrenal disruption. Alternatively, failure may follow. In case of defeat it appears we may see the decline.

Before that happens, several aspects to consider on the topic. Previously, back in those heady early days, of optimism and energy, I wrote an article calling it a phenomenon. People were very angry, which was helpful because everyone knows how to confirm lack of cult status is when its acolytes react defensively denying scrutiny of the beliefs.

Recent events recently are equally notable. Opposition to the style has now become the cult. Online outrage is widespread, disappointed commentators, shots of angry middle-aged followers overseas cheated out of three days of cricket, like a room full of people wanting fairness.

Meanwhile, we have the wider backdrop of the host’s complex more culturally hard-wired exasperation at these weirdly passive-aggressive buccaneers, out there saying, hey, that thing you love and have honed as part of your identity from the opposition, it’s just a joke after all.

And this is the real point. All movements are similar. Bazball was a cult since the sport itself is insular. Or rather, the team has long been exclusive, a circle, a garden party, an insular community with a long history of ceremonial past behind it. Historically, this was where influence is guarded. It’s the imperial sport of England, the early image-makers. And surprisingly, the nation has its own culture, a series of esoteric hierarchies, a royal family remains.

The players have been sealed up in this environment for years. Attempting to break free, to build a better atmosphere, they are simply replicating their upbringing, forming a new circle, an exclusive group, but now with a new team and a coach encouraging individuality as long as yourself is quite a lot like myself.

Live where your feet are. Embrace challenges. Despite efforts, you remain stuck.

Considering this, it might be appropriate to have some sympathy for the movement, to acknowledge its merits, which are significant. How to define it? Encouraging expression. Questioning traditions. Batting aggressively|Attacking with
